What is Tongue - Tie

 

Most of us think of Tongue Tie as a condition we find ourselves in when we are too excited to speak. Actually, tongue-tie is the non-medical term for a relatively ordinary physical condition that limits the use of the tongue, ankyloglossia.

Before we are born, a tough cord of tissue that guides growth of jaws structures is located in the middle of the mouth. It is called a frenulum. After birth, the lingual frenulum continues to guide the situation of incoming teeth. As we grow, it recedes and thin. This frenulum is observable and easily felt if you look in the mirror in your tongue. In some kids, the frenulum is especially tight or fails to recede and may cause tongue mobility harms. The tongue is one of the most important muscles for speech and swallowing. For this cause having tongue-tie can lead to speech or eating problems, which may be serious in a number of persons. A new child with a too tight frenulum can have problem sucking and may have poor weight gain.  If you think your kid has a Tongue Tie that is for the reason that breastfeeding troubles, you may need to see a specialist who can assess your breastfeeding and check your baby's jaws to see whether the tight frenulum may require to be released. 

While the tongue is really able to compensate and many kids have no speech impediment due to tongue-tie, others may.
